Director of Fermentation

Arzeda is seeking a director of fermentation who thrives on developing and optimizing fermentation processes to achieve commercially relevant performance. The successful candidate will have responsibility for:

  • Setting up Arzeda’s multi-scale fermentation platform and leading a small team of associate scientists.
  • Operating fermenters at multiple scales to rapidly characterize strain performance.
  • Design and implement DOE-based optimization strategies to improve process conditions to rapidly improve productivity, yield and titer and develop scalable fermentation processes
  • Integrate and interpret various data types across hundreds of experiments.
  • Interface with the Arzeda’s pathway design, strain engineering, analytics and downstream process teams to rapidly develop industrial processes.
  • As needed, interface with industrial partners and contract manufacturing organizations for fermentation process scale-up.

Job Requirements

PhD in chemical engineering (with emphasis on fermentation process), metabolic engineering, microbiology or equivalent with a minimum of 5+ years of experience in an industrial setting is required for this job. Demonstrated ability to develop and execute novel batch and fed-batch fermentations from microtiter plates, to flasks to bioreactors while generating actionable physiological understanding and driving strain or pathway engineering decision-making is required. Ability to rapidly analyze and interpret fermentation data is expected, as is operational familiarity with multiple industrial fermentation hosts such as yeast, Bacillus subtilis and E. coli. Experience with automated data analysis is a plus. Experience with bioreactor design or simulation, and/or database creation and maintenance are pluses. Proven ability to interact productively with protein, strain and downstream process engineers to rapidly design best-in-class industrial processes will move you to the front of the pack. Preference will be given to candidates that have a proven track record to successfully lead small and agile teams and deliver on project goals. Job Requirements

Demonstrated ability to engineer industrial strains (E. coli, yeasts or Bacillus) that have been successfully used at scale is a must. Ability to rapidly deploy traditional techniques of metabolic engineering (rational, semi-rational and evolution-based) is expected. Experience with, or desire to learn, newer approaches including CRISPR/Cas9, synthetic biology, multiplexed fermentation systems such as Sartorius Ambr205, and big data-based techniques are all pluses.  Proven experience with the fermentative production of industrial enzymes and proteins, while not required, will move you to the front of the pack.  Preference will be given to candidates that have a proven track record to successfully lead teams and deliver on project goals.

Preparatory Scale Chemist

Job Description 

Arzeda is seeking a prep-scale chemist who has a passion for developing scalable downstream processes for the industrial production of proteins and chemicals.  Arzeda is a dynamic biotech start-up at the forefront of the synthetic biology revolution. A “deep tech” company, we are passionate about our work and our vision to use large scale computation to better engineer biology for industrial applications.

The successful candidate will have responsibility operating equipment and process steps such as for example:

  • Preparative Chromatography: setup commercial unit including test and validation. Run real feed operations and perform routine maintenance, for a continuous 4-column preparative-scale chromatography unit.  Prepare mass balance for feed and product fractions in Excel in clear form. Order receive unpack and store supplies as needed. Arrange for send out samples on occasion as needed for ICPOES or ICP-MS to check metals, salts, as well as NPS.  Negotiate as needed / if needed low cost for these analyses.
  • Ion Exchange: Setup glass cation, anion and decolorizing columns for gram and kg scale polishing of aqueous streams.  Similar to DI water preparation equipment, but for product stream. Prepare mass balance of weights in and out. Monitor conductivity and pH in and out.
  • Membranes: Setup and operate kg scale membrane separation flat sheet unit. Prepare mass balance of weights and components in and out. Measure membrane flux vs transmembrane pressure.
  • Evaporation: Setup and operate liter scale rotovap.   Prepare mass balance of weights and components in and out. Measure evaporation rate. Maintain vacuum pump.
  • Chemical reactors: Setup and operate liter scale reactor.   Prepare mass balance of weights and components in and out.  Prepare plot and table of time course samples for reagents and products.

 Job Requirements

A BS in chemical engineering or chemistry or biological engineering with demonstrated experience with process equipment operation, and ability to learn and operate techniques such as above. A minimum of 2 years of industry experience is required.  Demonstrated success in working with a downstream process team or with the preparation and purification of proteins/carbohydrate/small molecules in an industrial setting is ideal. The successful candidate must be willing to work in a small, fun, result focused environment, be able to work independently, and possess strong interpersonal skills. Computational Scientist – Metabolic Modeling

Arzeda is seeking a full-stack computational scientist equally at home with chemistry and biology to make significant contributions to our computational metabolic pathway design stack, Scylax™. The candidate’s responsibilities will be

  • Developing algorithms to probe the entirety of biodesignable space for novel biochemical synthesis
  • Enhancing and improving the performance of Scylax™.
  • Connecting genomic and other biological data to computationally designed pathways.
  • Designing and implementing methods for storing and versioning large metabolic datasets.
  • Interfacing the Scylax™ toolchain with in-house biochemical databases.

Job Requirements

The successful candidate will hold an MS or PhD in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, chemical engineering, or related field with at least 2+ years of industry experience or postdoctoral study. Experience developing software in Python, C++, or Java is required. Candidates should have experience drawn from multiple aspects of

  • Designing novel metabolic pathways or tackling organic retrosynthesis
  • Developing software with a cheminformatics package such as RDKit, CDK, OpenEye, or the ChemAxon toolset.
  • Working with bioinformatics tools such as BLAST, HMMER, multiple alignment and other search methods to process and analyze genomic data.
  • Working with metabolic models, such as kinetic modeling, flux balance analysis or other COBRA methodologies, and whole genome modeling.
  • Using or developing with a relational database such as MySQL or PostgreSQL.
