Job Description

Arzeda is seeking an expert in computational protein design. The successful candidate will help plan and lead the design of key enzyme targets for both our internal product portfolio as well as our industrial collaborations. The candidate’s responsibilities will be:

  • understanding and critically reviewing existing enzymology, biochemical and structural data
  • analyzing and developing mechanistic models of enzyme active sites
  • performing the computational design of enzymes and proteins
  • participating in the development of novel design methodologies including automation and scale-up of Arzeda’s protein design platform

Job Requirements

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in biochemistry, chemistry, structural biology, computational biology, or related field. Excellent proficiency with molecular modeling and design packages, such as Rosetta, and visible track record in computational protein design are required. Proven experience in enzymology is highly desirable. Experience with computer programming or scripting (C/C++, Python) is highly desirable. The successful candidate must be willing to work in a small, driven environment, be able to work autonomously and possess strong interpersonal skills. The successful candidate will lead and execute lab-based experimental work to identify and develop downstream separation and purification steps for the manufacture of high purity chemical intermediates, monomers and sweeteners.

Job Requirements

A PhD in chemistry or chemical engineering with hands-on experience in the synthesis and purification of high purity monomers and chemical intermediates. Lab-based experience focused on the development and purification of molecules for polymer applications. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated a high level of skill in the preparation and purification of organic acids, esters, amides, alcohols, aldehydes, and amines, preferably in an industrial setting. The candidate should also have demonstrated expertise in analysis of intermediates and monomers using methods including HPLC, GC-MS and other relevant techniques to identify and address impurities with the potential to impact downstream polymerization. The preferred candidate will be an expert in lab-based purification techniques including distillation, solvent extraction, and preparatory scale ion exchange and chromatography-based separations. The candidate must be detail-oriented and comfortable presenting and synthesizing experimental results to draw solid conclusions and recommendations with a focus on producing high quality work. The successful candidate must be self-motivated with a positive work-ethic and willing to work in a small, fun, result focused environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Maintaining lab supplies, media and reagents
  • Expression of enzymes in microbial systems (E. coli, B. subtilis and S. cerevisiae)
  • High throughput purification of enzymes for functional characterization
  • Performing functional in vitro assays on enzymes and on in vivo enzymatic pathways (including subsequent data analysis and technical report preparation)
  • Fermentation of synthetic pathways in microbial systems (primarily E. coli, B. subtilis, S. cerevisiae)

Qualifications

  • M.S./ B.S. in biological sciences with a minimum 2+ years of experience in an industrial setting.
  • Prior research experience in recombinant protein expression in microbial systems, protein purification and quantification, and protein characterization (SDS-PAGE, western blot) is required.
  • Knowledge in current molecular biology and fermentation techniques (bioreactors) is a plus.
  • Candidates with experience in biocatalysis and enzyme assay development are preferred.
  • Careful attention to detail, the ability to work independently, as well as in a team-oriented environment, excellent organizational, written, verbal, and computer skills are essential. Additionally, the candidate is expected to contribute freely to the team research environment in a manner conducive to the success of the research projects.

The successful candidate will play a critical role in the continued development of our enzyme engineering platform at Arzeda to rapidly screen and optimize enzyme functions for our novel metabolic pathways. She/he will be responsible for:

  • Developing optimized conditions for robust HT enzyme assays
  • Implementing miniaturized, reliable enzyme assays
  • Perform HT enzyme preparation and assays
  • Working with automation and database/LIMS experts, the candidate will be expected to contribute to the implementation of robust and HT enzyme preparation and assay as well as data analysis workflows.
  • Working closely with and training associate scientists and technicians to develop, optimize and perform laboratory SOPs related to enzyme expression, purification and assay.
  • Interfacing with upstream (e.g., Protein Design, Pathway and Strain Design, and Genetic Build-Design teams) and downstream teams (e.g., Analytics (LC/MS) and Fermentation teams) for efficient data exchange and transfer of materials

 

Job Requirements

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in biochemistry, biotechnology, molecular biology or a related field with at least 3 years of relevant experience in academia and/or industry. This position requires a deep knowledge of enzymology, including enzyme kinetics, protein characterization, analytical biochemistry, and HT-assay development and troubleshooting. Familiarity with automation or semi-automated instrumentation is a plus. The candidate must be comfortable presenting and synthesizing experimental results to draw solid conclusions and recommendations with a focus on producing high quality work. He/she must be self-motivated with a positive work-ethic, pay attention to detail, safety and good lab practice, and willing to work in a small, fun, result-focused environment.
