Preparatory Scale Chemist – Distillation

Arzeda is seeking a preparative scale chemist who has a passion for developing scalable downstream processes for the industrial production of proteins and chemicals. The successful candidate will assist or lead the setup and the operation of bench scale equipment at up to 1 kg scale. Steps may include Distillation, Evaporation, Crystallization, Extraction, Esterification, and other separations steps. The equipment operated by the candidate include 24/40 and 14/20 glassware, rotovap & wiped film evaporation equipment, pumps, scales, thermocouples, etc. Tasks performed by the candidate include equipment operation, mass balances for components and over all, operation of a walk in hood, etc.

Job Requirements

A BS in chemical engineering or chemistry or biological engineering with demonstrated experience with process equipment operation, and ability to learn and operate techniques such as above. A minimum of 2 years of industry experience is required. Demonstrated success in working with a downstream process team or with the preparation and purification of organic acids, esters, amides, alcohols, aldehydes, and amines in an industrial setting is ideal. Working knowledge or experience with custom chemical tollers at up to 50 gallon scale is a bonus. Scientist, Synthetic Biology / Protein Engineering

The successful candidate will have responsibility for:

  • Designing expression operating units for high-throughput, single-enzyme screens and multi-enzyme micro-fermentation experiments (i.e., rapid pathway prototyping)
  • Constructing large, high-quality libraries for protein and pathway engineering, and efficiently transforming expression or platform strains with these libraries
  • Generating specialized platform strains and industrial strains
  • Working closely with and training associate scientists and technicians to develop, optimize and perform laboratory SOPs related to genetic design-build
  • Interfacing with upstream design teams (e.g., Protein, Pathway and Strain design teams) and downstream implementation teams (e.g., Assay, Fermentation and Analytics teams) for efficient data exchange and transfer of materials

Job Requirements
The successful candidate will hold a PhD in molecular biology, biochemistry, chemical engineering or a related field. Previous experience using computational tools for rational genetic design is necessary for this position. Demonstrated experience with constructing large DNA libraries (> 106 members) encoding proteins or metabolic pathways is also required. Candidates are expected to have experience with protein engineering, directed evolution and/or synthetic metagenomics to improve enzyme activity or other characteristics (e.g., solubility). Industrial experience is a plus, especially experience with laboratory automation. Additional experience with or knowledge drawn from the following is helpful.

  • Development of creative selection schemes and/or enzyme assays for high-throughput screening
  • High-throughput, high-efficiency DNA assembly methods and next-gen sequencing technologies
  • Genome editing techniques such as CRISPR/Cas, MAGE
  • Strain engineering approaches – metabolic modeling and simulation experience (e.g., FBA)

Job Requirements

PhD in chemical engineering (with emphasis on fermentation process), metabolic engineering, microbiology or equivalent with a minimum of 5+ years of experience in an industrial setting is required for this job. Demonstrated ability to develop and execute novel batch and fed-batch fermentations from microtiter plates, to flasks to bioreactors while generating actionable physiological understanding and driving strain or pathway engineering decision-making is required. Ability to rapidly analyze and interpret fermentation data is expected, as is operational familiarity with multiple industrial fermentation hosts such as yeast, Bacillus subtilis and E. coli. Experience with automated data analysis is a plus. Experience with bioreactor design or simulation, and/or database creation and maintenance are pluses. Proven ability to interact productively with protein, strain and downstream process engineers to rapidly design best-in-class industrial processes will move you to the front of the pack. Preference will be given to candidates that have a proven track record to successfully lead small and agile teams and deliver on project goals.
